My second visit to the House on the Hill in South Park, Seattle. Due to waist-high debris it was impossible to get more than a couple of feet inside the house. The interior is severely burned; it smells and is very unsafe. On the outside there is broken glass everywhere in addition to piles of debris. At one time this was a house with a view of Downtown Seattle in the distance as well as the Duwamish River nearby. I don’t know what “Skin Trap House” means, so if anyone has any ideas…. feel free to comment. The ground floor of the interior looks more like a dumping ground than anything else; perhaps after the fire people just repurposed the house? A good percentage the debris is not fire damaged. The image of the stairs leading to the second floor I found most appealing and engaging.

Scanned from a 35mm print in 1970. Location: East Oakland, CA. A friend I was staying with had just remodeled her bathroom and had not yet disposed of some of the debris. I found this in her backyard and of course, was immediately thinking of a photo opportunity. Seems my interest in subject matter has not totally changed over the past 45 years :-).

Abandoned Ship

About a year ago* this ship was pushed into this moorage location adjacent to a metal scrapyard on the Duwamish River in South Park ( South Seattle). Since that time the scrapyard has ceased being a viable business and the property has been cleared, few reminders of the scrap business. What will become of this rusty, abandoned ship is a mystery at this point in time. There is an ongoing effort to clean up the river that has been going on since the EPA declared the area a SuperFund site back in the 1970’s, the first such declaration by the EPA.

*I just happened to be at this location to watch the ship being pushed by two small tugs into this spot. I have been shooting this location regularly for the past few years, documenting the major changes that are ongoing.

This Jeep has Canadian plates that expired in 2006. I would guess there is an interesting story behind this vehicle and how it got here, in the LES. The sign on the left say: “Active Driveway”. With the barbed wire, I think not.
