Along the Tracks (Con’t.)

One of the questions that comes to mind, when viewing and shooting street art is: what does this say about our society/culture? Some people view it as vandalism while others view it as a form of contemporary art. Because the palette is in or near a public space does that change the dynamics? Or. like the images I have been presenting, are mostly out of the view of the public, but on a BNSF railway right of way does that change things? To get this space both the artist and I have to trespass across those railroad tracks. The palette in these works is just a retaining wall, so maybe the work enhances the large, drab concrete space?

I guess it begs the age old question: What is art? 

We all have to answer that for ourselves, I guess.

Version 2From the Lucille St. bridge, looking NW. Some of rail lines leading into Seattle. Some of the spurs off of these main lines are not in use today as industries have relocated outside the city limits or just closed down.

Walking the RR Tracks

Location: Rail road tracks that run parallel to Airport Way So. in Georgetown , Seattle. There’s a blast of steam in the middle of the image coming from a  small industrial building. Downtown Seattle in the distance.

Georgetown Vanished

Over the past 10 years I have been photographing two Seattle neighborhoods, South Park and Georgetown. Both neighborhoods have been going through a lot of changes, but more so in the case of Georgetown. This wall is now gone.

The above brick wall was part of the massive. brick structure of the old Seattle Brewery. Today, this wall is gone. At the time I shot these images the walls were propped up or stabilized, on the back side, with large, steel rods or beams ( it wouldn’t take much of an earthquake to being them down). Arched windows, signage and other brick details are really cool and add so much character. Details, that today, would never even be a consideration in constructing a building, brick or otherwise.

My next posting will be of another old structure, Seattle Flour Company in West Seattle.
