Tropical Portland

Bamboo and Palm trees in the NW. With all of the rain and cold weather we have 9 months a year it surprises me plants like this survive and thrive. A couple of years ago during an ice storm these bamboo plants were literally laying in the street covered with snow and ice. After the ice melted they sprung back to their original shape.

Mike’s Old House

I have posted photos of this house in NE Portland, not knowing the owner and much about the history. This past week I met Mike, the owner by inheritance, of this old home. Mike has been doing home renovations in Portland for the past 3 decades. Rather than tear this house down, for somewhat sentimental reasons, Mike decided he was going to refurbish. This refurb will be a major project that will take some time. The ‘bones’ of the home are relatively good, but the roof, porches, electrical and plumbing are shot. I hope to be able to document as much of this renovation as possible. Mike knows I have a photoblog and that I have posted a couple of images of the home, pre-renovation.

Stay tuned for updates in 2011 and perhaps beyond.

Old House

This house was hardly visible from the sidewalk a couple of years ago. I used to walk by it and wonder if it was occupied. Turns out there was a very old man living inside. I saw him on one of my walks with our granddaughter. Shortly afterwards ( a few months later ) I saw a younger man cleaning the yard and cutting back the brush, revealing a very run-down house that looked like it was in the verge of falling down. My guess is the elderly owner passed away and now the house is in the hands of his heirs. I’m very curious about the inside of the house.
