Razor Wire and Graffiti
Adjacent to the 8th Ave. Park is a scrapyard that is protected by fencing, razor wire, guard dogs, cameras, etc. My bank should have this much security!
8th Ave. Park: South Park, Seattle
A postal-stamp sized park in South Park that few know about as it is mostly a light industrial area. Kayakers use it to launch themselves into the Duwamish River and then either travel the river itself or head out into Elliott Bay. This is the spot where I stalked a blue heron. I posted some of those photos last week.

This cement column used to support something large, but now sits alone adjacent to the river. The building below appears to have sat unused for quite some time.

Of course, what would any urban trail be without graffiti and generally poorly placed street art? The pilings in the second photo are from days gone by when there was a lot of river traffic and commerce.
Weathered House in NW Portland

This building on First Hill has been abused so badly over the years. Multiple layers of paint and posters nearly disguise the brick walls.
Fading Ad
I spent a couple of hours in a small, 2 block area of First Hill in Seattle the other day. I was attracted to the area due to the large number of brick buildings. The specific area I was in was between Union and Pike on 11th and 12th Ave. On 11th and Union I came across this ‘fading ad’. There is a posting, I discovered, on another blog from 2009 with a photo of a much less faded H.W. Baker Linen Co. I looked into the company and apparently they still exist in New Jersey, but have long since vacated Seattle. As I finished taking this photo I heard a voice behind me blurt out: “What are you taking a photo of?” At first I ignored the voice. She again asked her question. This time I turned around, to find a smallish women about my age with a tripod strapped to her back. Apparently she had shot this fading ad quite a few times and really likes to keep track of it as it fades in time. I’m not sure what relevance this has to the overall experience of shooting the ad, but…..there you have it.
Fading Vespa Sign
Although nearly faded away, this is a sign on the old Vespa Club in Georgetown. The painting is supposed to show a woman ( circa 1960’s) sitting on a yellow Vespa scooter.
