A short walk from the large Kylemore Abbey is the Gothic cathedral. Hopefully you get a sense of just how remarkable the place is considering the remoteness of the location and the terrain.
The Gothic style is really cool, the details. I think one of the details inside the cathedral that impressed me were some marble features. They used Connemara marble, which is quarried not far from the Abbey. There are 4-5 different colors of marble. It was really an amazing feature played against all of the stonework. I may have a photo of the marble to post. We also went to the Connemara Marble Factory and saw the marble in its raw form as well as see craftsmen working marble jewelry and other small items. Very rustic place, like stepping back in time. The setting of the Abbey and Cathedral is just so impressive, placed against the side of a hill with a lake in front and the hills across the valley. Overall, I found it to be a very moving place.
I read about this remarkable cathedral at school. Amazing captures! What did you think of it?
