Views along the Waterfront

The Victoria Clipper runs daily between Seattle and Victoria, B.C. Two recognizable items, a Seattle ferry boat and the Space Needle, currently painted in its original colors to commemorate its 50th year.

Closing the Locks

Large gates closing. Second photo the gates are closed. Third photo is one of the hydraulic hinges ( really not sure what the technical term is ). Once the gates are closed the water level is either lowered or raised depending on which direction the boats are going. This is the northern lock that allows boats to move from Lake Washington out to Puget Sound. The water level has to be lowered because the water level of the lake is higher than that of Puget Sound.

Diving Class

Diving class just off shore on Alki Dr. in West Seattle. Saturday mornings there are usually a group of divers at this location or on the other side of the point, two miles from this spot. If you click to enlarge the image you can see Mt. Baker in the center background.

Orca

From the back of the ferry boat I was able to watch and shoot a pod of Orca moving south. Apparently there were 7 Orca in this pod that were feeding on the salmon that were running a week or so ago. I was only able to spot 3 of the pod. With a 70-200mm lens this is as close as I could bring them in. A 400mm lens is beyond my budget, but I was happy to catch what I could and better yet, just to witness the pod moving and feeding was amazing. Please click to get a better view.

Beach

Partial view of the beach at Lincoln Park. If you click to enlarge you just might be able to see Coleman Pool at the point of the beach, surrounded by a white wall. Coleman Pool is unusual as it is filled with salt water that is pumped from Puget Sound. As children my brother and I would go swimming in the pool during summer, the only time it was open. The salt water was fun to swim in as it is more buoyant than fresh water.
