More from the Green River Trail

Of course, what would any urban trail be without  graffiti and generally poorly placed street art? The pilings in the second photo are from days gone by when there was a lot of river traffic and commerce.

Cedar River

Section of the Cedar River in Renton, Wa. The Cedar River Watershed supplies a large portion of Seattle’s water. An old pedestrian bridge, below, is showing its age. In this part of the country anything left outside will inevitably have something green growing on it shortly.

Views from the Train

Some images taken from the Amtrak train that runs between Seattle and Portland. Two of the images are of an industrial area the train passes by and the third shot is looking south, towards downtown Portland as we cross the Willamette River.

14th Street Bridge

I have been following the progress of the new 14th St. Bridge from the start of the demo. Thought I would post something fairly recent to mark the progress. I have a few images from this past week, but they are still on the chip in the camera.

Dredging out the East Cofferdam

They are still digging out the river bottom on the East cofferdam on the 14th St. Bridge Project in South Park. I wonder if I am the only one photographing the project, from beginning to end?

South Park Bridge- A Look Back

Two similar views of the South Park Bridge that is now under reconstruction. The mid-span or the part that raises for boat traffic has been dismantled for some time. Currently there are two cofferdams in place where new bridge columns will be built.

14th St. Bridge

Recent photos of the construction of the new 14th St. ( Duwamish River ) Bridge. Top Photo: view of East Span with new cofferdam behind the barge. Middle Photo: view of the new cofferdam on West side of span. Bottom Photo: view of original East Span. The interesting thing in this view is the eight vertical I-beams that had to be installed on the old section in order to hold the weight of the crane parked on top. The bridge could not hold the load of a crane that was needed to build the new bridge. Driving the 8 beams into the river bottom to add strength was a cool, engineering idea.

Cofferdams Finished

The two cofferdams for the new bridge in South Park are finished. I am not sure if the water has been pumped out or not. Apparently the project is going to continue on during the evenings for a while.

Crane

The large crane at the site of the South Park Bridge. There are three cranes at the site at this time. This large one sits on a very large barge. Even with a wide angle lens I couldn’t get all of the barge in one shot. The yellow crane up on the old bridge in the background will give you a sense of scale.
