Kind of hard to hold and focus a camera with a french fry in your mouth. Actually I used a small, 24-70mm, telephoto with both camera and lens set at Manual. Seagulls move fairly fast, faster than most cameras can autofocus. The method ( I shouldn’t reveal) I use is- to pre-focus the lens for a certain distance after spot metering for light, when a gull flies into the range I have set, I push the shutter button and hope for the best.
Awesome! Today I stood at the ship canal and tried to photograph the UW crew racing team, so in future I need to do as you have said, focus on a spot and wait for a moving target to move into the pre-focus.
I take a similar approach to Street Photography. Find a spot where light, people and architecture converge and wait for the shot to cone to me.
This is directly opposite of what most instructors of photography teach.
Well, I guess I’ve given away two of my secrets tonight. Time to retire😉.

I’m guessing you held french fries in your teeth to entice the seagull to come closer? Oh, wait, no….maybe you used a zoom lens?
