Windows First

First the windows from the buildings at Plant II are removed as part of the demo project. The EPA declared the lower 5 miles of the Duwamish River a Superfund Site 10 years ago. Apparently there are 11 different options to choose from in terms of cleanup. Depending on the plan chosen it could take as long as 43 years to complete. Demolition of the Boeing Buildings seem to be a first step. This is the site where the B-17 was manufactured as well as the Sheet Metal Shop and other functions over the years.

Note: I think the Duwamish River is our Gowanus Canal. The Gowanus Canal, in Brooklyn,  ( which I have posted a few photos of on this blog ) was declared a Superfund Site a few months ago. Both waterways share a past of industrial use and abuse for decades. It will be interesting to follow both sites and see how each responds to clean up efforts as well as post-cleanup developement. As a very young child I lived a stones throw from this area of the Duwamish River, actually just across the river from the photo above, for a few months before moving and starting kindergarten elsewhere.  Currently our son lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn, just a few blocks from the 3rd St. Bridge that connects Park Slope tp Carroll Gardens.

Thinking, or Thumb-Sucking Gargolye

I’m not sure why people put these gargoyle-like items in and around their gardens. This one seems more benevolent than most, but still it kind of creeps me out. I always feel a sense of negativity when I look at one. Maybe this is a thumb-sucking gargoyle?

Old House

This house was hardly visible from the sidewalk a couple of years ago. I used to walk by it and wonder if it was occupied. Turns out there was a very old man living inside. I saw him on one of my walks with our granddaughter. Shortly afterwards ( a few months later ) I saw a younger man cleaning the yard and cutting back the brush, revealing a very run-down house that looked like it was in the verge of falling down. My guess is the elderly owner passed away and now the house is in the hands of his heirs. I’m very curious about the inside of the house.

Contrasting Brick

The bright, brick building is adjacent to the Gowanus Canal, Park Slope, Brooklyn. From what I have read it has been abandoned for many years. There is a fence around it, but it hasn’t stopped some of the graffiti artists from expressing themselves.

The curved, brick building is near Prospect Park. I think around the Grand Army Plaza. (Please excuse the light pole cutting across the image. With the lens I had on the camera at the time I couldn’t position myself to avoid the object. Cropping it out didn’t seem like a viable option).
