Channel

Duwamish River at 14th St. Bridge. These pilings, I believe, were put in place to guide the large ships through the narrow passage of the drawbridge. Right now construction of the new bridge is progressing. They are building the cofferdams for the new bridge using the large crane seen in a previous post.

Archeological Dig at 14th St. Bridge

Before the actual construction starts on the new bridge an archeological survey of the site must be done. A few dig spots, like this one, are being looked at. You can see the different strata of the soil. Once the survey is done the SDOT website will post data, images and a video of the survey. More information than I can comprehend, although there are some interesting things being found. There were no permanent villages or settlements in this location of the current river and bridge, just seasonal fishing camps.  The black tank holds water they use for sluicing the material as needed.

Foundation

All that is left of this house is the foundation. Adjacent to the bridge on-ramp, I saw a team of workers last summer in hazmat suits going through the house. At first I thought it was a drug bust of a meth lab. A couple of weeks later I was in the area again, shooting, and this time the whole house was gone. I think the house stood where a small park/playground will be once the new bridge is built.

Reflective Re-Visit

On a (rare ) clear day in Seattle I was able to revisit one of my favorite landmarks in transition, the 14th St Bridge.  Over the next couple of weeks ( as a warning 🙂 ) I will be posting some of the images from this clear, sunny day. Although the subject matter has been covered here, I think when the intangibles  ( weather  ) change it is worth a second look.
